SFCxUS Donation Policy

Our Commitment to Independence

Smartphone Free Childhood US (SFCxUS) exists to protect and restore healthy childhoods by reducing the influence of smartphones, social media, and digital technologies on children. To maintain our integrity and act in the best interests of children (ages 0–18), we are committed to financial independence.

We do not accept funding from corporations or individuals (or their foundations/non-profits) whose financial interests conflict with our mission. This includes companies and corporate foundations that produce, promote, or profit from online and digital products aimed at children and families, including, but not limited to, social media, smartphones, AI-based automation tools, video games, digital “safety” filters, and products marketed as educational technology. We also do not accept donations from their senior executives, board members, or significant shareholders.

We aim to speak with a clear and independent voice, free from financial entanglements or real or perceived bias. Our advocacy, education, and recommendations are grounded in independent science and guided only by what is best for children, not by any corporate or political agenda.

We do not accept contributions (cash or in-kind) from:

  • Big Tech companies including Alphabet/Google, Apple, Amazon, Meta (Facebook, Instagram, Threads), Microsoft, ByteDance (TikTok), Snap, and any company primarily engaged in building or promoting digital products for children or families.

  • EdTech companies, including producers of digital curriculum, remote learning tools, or student behavior/monitoring platforms.

  • Companies offering digital “solutions” that purport to mitigate the harms of technology on children (e.g. content filters, monitoring apps).

  • Gaming companies, particularly those that develop or market online multiplayer or mobile games to children and teens.

  • Senior executives, board members, or key leadership from any of the above entities.

  • Industry trade groups

When in question, decisions regarding funding sources will be made by the Smartphone Free Childhood US leadership council and will be determined based on alignment with our stated mission and values. Smartphone Free Childhood US will never accept funding from sources that compromise our ability to operate independently.
